Two weeks ago I started a 12 week series of quilting classes for 4 of my friends. Each one, at one point over the years, has asked me to teach her how to make the wall hangings found throughout our house. They are eager students, but very quickly discovered that the art of quilting is one that, aside from needing a keen eye for color and design, requires an exactness in measuring and stitching; neither of these is ingrained in this culture. It requires incredible patience and persistence- again rare qualities around here.
I never thought 8 years ago, that I'd be to a point that I could teach a class in the language I was learning!! But, gosh, this is sure a stretch! Although I CAN get my point across, and there is MUCH playing of charades, it is certainly not eloquent! Here I am teaching by showing, and learning patience MYSELF.
Each woman is making great strides, despite NEVER having used a rotary cutter, NEVER having measured using the Imperial measuring system, and NEVER having used an electric sewing machine. This little girl has just cut herself on one of the rotary cutters, and is clearly NOT very happy! Her mom really needs this few hours to do something for herself, so please ask that she could be blessed with this time for her!
The fabric they are using was all donated, and pre-matched according to a color theme. That way, we are at least guaranteed quilts that won't be mixing brick red with lime green (mostly). Sometimes, you just have to bite your tongue and make suggestions, but not push. Here are the first photos of their first completed blocks. Aren't they pretty??!

Another fun thing is that NariLoo will get to have a playmate once a week! She and her friend managed to really "beautify" the house last week in their own special way.

Beautiful work, especially for first timers. Please congratulate them for me and tell them that I am just learning quilting too.
